My Life, Currently

Zak and I aren't moving.  We are disappointed that we still won't have a window, but so relieved that we don't have to move--let me tell you the story.

First off, our apartment is window-less.  We have a lovely elevator shaft type thing in our kitchen, but no windows to the outside world.  So it's kind of weird to wake up at 10 AM and not have the sunlight.  Ok, it's bizarre, but the rest of the apartment we like.  It has a funky little alcove that is great for storing all of our boxes, luggage, etc.  But Zak has said from the beginning that if there was an apartment on the same floor open for next semester, he wanted to move.  For awhile, I was hesitant, because I didn't want to pack.  I haven't stayed in the same apartment for more than a semester since my freshman year, and it is tiring.  But the lack of light from the outside got to me and I finally gave in.  Our manager said it would be no problem to sign us up for #206 for January.  We were really jazzed, and told we would most likely be able to leave our stuff in our current apartment until we came back from Christmas break.

Well, the other day we went to talk to the tenets in #206 to find out if they were moving before us, so we could maybe move our stuff in before we left for three weeks.  Not only were they not moving until the 25 or 26, but they didn't speak the best English.  So that was fun.  We went to ask our manager if we would still be able to leave our stuff here until January, but that wasn't going to pan out.  We didn't sleep well that night.  We decided we would have to get a storage unit.  But then we started worrying about moving all our furniture in our little car, blah blah blah.  It was a bad night.

The next day we went to talk to our manager and see if there was some way that we could keep our apartment and have the couple who were going to move in, take #206 instead.  She gave us their number, and we called the couple and explained our situation.  A few hours later, they called back and said that would be fine.  It was as if a huge boulder had been lifted off our shoulders, it was incredible the amount of relief we felt from that call.

So, we still may be windowless, but at least everything worked out.  All we have to do is figure out what to do with our car...

The city of Rexburg is beyond dumb.  They don't plow the streets, or do much of anything, for that matter.  There is snow on the ground here from November to March.  It's not like winter is a surprise here.  I am from California, and it would be understandable, that if we got a huge snow storm and the roads remained unplowed, untouched.  But here, it doesn't make any sense.  That is just one problem I have with Rexburg (the list goes on and on...).  But on top of that, they decided we need a card or whatever for our car to park in some parking lots overnight.  We have to park a block away from the apartment as it is, and now with these cards, they plan to reinforce that cars have to be moved within 48 hours, thus eliminating cars that need to be repaired, etc.  I'm ok with that idea, but annoyed at the execution.  We went to the city hall to get our card, and while there, we asked about what to do over the Christmas break, seeing as how our car would be in Rexburg those three weeks.  The guy wasn't very helpful, he just said that it might get towed if there was a huge storm and they needed to plow the parking lots.

Seriously?? The city doesn't plow when there are other storms, they're really going to do that during Christmas break, when like, 140 people are going to be here?  Methinks not.  We were told by this guy that the school would have a parking lot open for the students to use.  So we called the school, who told us they hadn't heard anything about that, but they would find out soon.  The lack of communication is just frustrating.

Hmm...other things going on.  Zak was sick this week, and it turns out that I have a cold now.  I've had a few papers and presentations due last week and will be due this week, so that's been fun.  But the thing that's taken up a lot of time has been a final project for my Humanities class.  The girls I sit with in class decided we were going to record a song and put pictures to it.  Well, as simple as that sounds....cut to me, editing music for 7 hours this week.

First off, Zak's computer didn't have the program he normally uses for editing and recording music.  And the microphone wasn't being recognized by the program he did have.  When we practiced the song (I was singing, as well, so multi-tasking...), it didn't go as smoothly, some of the parts weren't right, it was hard for me to sing my part and play, etc.  We couldn't really have me record the accompaniment and then record us singing in parts to it, it didn't match up quite right//it was too hard.  So what we ended up doing was record each of us individually, singing the part with me playing it on the piano.  But we didn't record the whole song, we did the song in six sections. 6 x 4 recordings = A LOT OF WORK FOR ME.

When I got back to the apartment, I found out that I, stupidly, had recorded the accompaniment faster than the singing parts.  So I had a grand ol' time making the voices speed up, by cutting away some stuff.  And then I got to match up not only my voice and BOTH girls, but all three voices with the piano.  It was insane.  It took so long that I have had it in my head for the last 3 days.  It turned out alright, in my opinion.  But Zak was great, he said he was really impressed with the result, considering I had never done anything like that before.  So it did turn out fine, but it was just something that didn't need to be so time-consuming, but was.

Luckily, I don't have a whole lot of work to do this week: an easy test, a medium test, an easy presentation, a paper, and... that's it!  Zak is off work this week (originally to pack our stuff up), but he will enjoy the new video games we got each other for Christmas.  That we are playing before Christmas.

Life is pretty good, overall.  Yesterday we had a lovely day together, Zak finally bought some gifts for me for Christmas and my birthday (some secret, some not), and we looked at jewelry (I'm getting diamond earrings for one of the occasions!), it was just a fun day.  We ate at Five Guys burger place--I hate to admit it, but I think they are better than In-N-Out.  That sucks, because I am a huge In-N-Out fan, you have to be if you're from CA, but that burger was amazing.  Yum.

I should try to sleep but I feel yucky. Blah.
